Jeremy Belknap (1744-1798), the founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society, was born in Boston and educated at Harvard College. He trained for the ministry, but he was also involved in a wide range of secular activities, one of which was the founding of the MHS, the first institution in the world organized primarily for publishing and collecting historical Americana.
