Guide to the Photograph Collection
Abstract
This collection consists of photographs of criminals collected by Massachusetts State Detective Benson Munyan.
Biographical Sketch
Benson Munyan was born in Leeds, Massachusetts, in 1837, the son of Orrin Munyan, a Methodist lay preacher, and his wife Susanna (Bardwell) Munyan. As a young man, Munyan worked in the cotton and brass mills of Haydenville, Massachusetts, a village in Williamsburg. He married Hattie Lathrop in 1858, with whom he had four children.
During the Civil War, Munyan was a member of the 27th Massachusetts Regiment. He was a well-known local figure and active in politics, serving as selectman in the 1870s and deputy sheriff in the years before being appointed to the newly-established Massachusetts State Detectives. After nearly two decades on the force, Munyan suffered a paralytic shock in 1896, and this, coupled with the loss of his wife in 1897, caused a steady decline in his health, leading to his retirement in February 1899. He died at the asylum in Northampton, Massachusetts, four months later.
The Massachusetts State Detectives were established in 1879 by Governor Thomas Talbot and were a precursor of today's Massachusetts State Police. In the first year of their existence, the 16 detectives made 461 arrests for a wide range of crimes. In addition to criminal investigations, they were responsible for inspecting public buildings and elevators. The photographs in this collection were used as aids in investigations, and a set was likely kept by each of the state detectives.

In addition to names, aliases, and crimes charged, the cards often include physical characteristics, nativity, literacy, employment status, and other identifying information. The collection contains cartes de visite, tintypes, and cabinet photographs, including a photograph of Detective Munson (#418.405). The collection also contains a few photographs of victims.
