Guide to the Photograph Collection
Abstract
This collection consists of photograph albums compiled by various members of the Howe family of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Biographical Sketch
The Howe family documented in these photograph albums are primarily descendants of Judge Samuel Howe (1785-1828) and his wife Sarah Lydia Robbins Howe (1787-1862) of Northampton, Massachusetts, through their son Estes (1814-1887). Estes first married Harriet M. Spelman (1814-1843) and had two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Lydia. In 1848, he married Lois L. White (1824-1911), with whom he had four children. Their daughter Lois Lilley Howe (1864-1964) became an architect and founder of the first all-female architectural firm in Boston.
