Guide to the Photograph Collection
Abstract
This collection comprises more than 700 photographs relating to the families of George Thompson Garrison and John Ritchie.
Biographical Sketches
George Thompson Garrison (1836-1904) was born in Brooklyn, Connecticut, the eldest son of reformer and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and his wife Eliza Helen Benson Garrison. His siblings were William Lloyd Garrison, Jr. (1838-1909), Wendell Phillips Garrison (1840-1907), Fanny Garrison Villard (1844-1928), and Francis Jackson Garrison (1848-1916); two other siblings died young. During the Civil War, Garrison became an officer in the 55th Massachusetts Regiment. After the war, he struggled to find a suitable career, at one point losing everything in the Great Fire of 1872 in Boston, at other times working for one of his brothers. In 1873, he married Annie Keene Anthony, the daughter of Harvard conchologist John Gould Anthony and Anna W. Rhodes Anthony. The couple had three children: Elizabeth (1874-1959), Rhodes Anthony (1877-1964), and Fanny (1879-1975). George Thompson Garrison died in 1904 in Newton, Massachusetts.
John Ritchie (1836-1919) was born in Boston, the son of Irish immigrant Uriah Ritchie and Susan Rand Ritchie. He graduated from Harvard with the Class of 1861, where he was a classmate of Wendell Phillips Garrison. During the Civil War, Ritchie served as quartermaster for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first African American regiment raised in the North during the Civil War. In 1866, he married his cousin Caroline Poole, who died the next year. Following her death, Ritchie spent his time traveling. He married Rosa Schoepffer of Germany in 1876 and lived in Dresden for a few years. Ritchie died in Jackson, New Hampshire, in 1919.
