Guide to the Photograph Collection

Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of portraits of unidentified sitters by American and foreign photographers and photograph studios.

Collection Description

This collection consists of portraits of unidentified sitters by American and foreign photographers and photograph studios. Included are cabinet card photographs, albumen prints, black-and-white prints, and studio mounts of various sizes, dating from 1869 through the early 20th century. Among the photographers and studios represented in the collection are Allen & Rowell, Elmer Chickering, Fred Green, Jose Maria Mora, Notman Photograph Company, James Notman, and James E. Purdy. Photographs include individual and group portraits of men, women, and children.

Arrangement

The photographs in this collection are arranged alphabetically by photographer or photograph studio. The collection will continue to grow as new photographs are added. New photographs will be listed under the name of the photographer or studio in the Detailed Description of the Collection below, but numbered with the next number in the sequence and filed in the last box of the collection.

Active dates for photographers and studios are taken from A Directory of Massachusetts Photographers, 1839-1900, by Chris Steele and Ronald Polito (Camden, Me.: Picton Press, ca. 1993), or from the cards themselves when dated or dateable by clothing.
