Abstract

This collection consists of portraits of officers and soldiers who served in the 56th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.

Collection Description

This collection consists of 66 carte de visite and tintype portraits of officers and soldiers who served in the 56th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, as well as superior officers in the U.S. Army. The photographs were collected by an unidentified member of the Regiment, who inscribed the backs of the photographs with information that identifies the subjects. The portraits were all taken ca. 1861-1865. Photographers include Henry Franklin Warren of Waltham, Mass. and James Wallace Black, Mrs. H. F. Stuart, and Simon Wing, all of Boston, Mass., among many others.
