Biographical Sketch

Charles Edward Benton was born 11 September 1841 in Amenia, New York, the son of William A., a farmer, and Betsey (Reed) Benton. In 1862, he enlisted in the 150th New York Regiment, known as the Dutchess County Regiment, and served with that regiment until the end of the war. In 1870, Benton purchased a dairy farm in Sharon, Connecticut, and married Clara Foster, who died just two years later. In 1875, he married Harriet Drown, a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, eventually settling in New Bedford in 1891. The Bentons later moved to Rochester, New York, where Charles died on 5 April 1928. He is buried in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, Mass. Benton was the author of several books, including genealogies and a memoir of his Civil War Service.
