Biographical Sketch

Jeremiah Colburn (1815-1891) was born 12 January 1815 to Calvin Colburn and Catherine Sybil Lakin Colburn. He married Eliza Ann Blackman (1820-1897) in 1846. They had one son, Jeremiah Blackman Colburn (1849-1849). Colburn was employed as a clerk for Seth James Thomas and his hat business before succeeding him in 1840. In 1853, Colburn was appointed as an appraiser in the Boston Custom House, a position he held until 1861. For the next 30 years, Colburn spent much of his time engaging in his personal interests, which included collecting autographs, coins, medals, books, manuscripts, art, various other antiquities, and natural history. He was a founder of the Prince Society (1858); Boston Numismatic Society (1860), serving as its president from 1865 until his death; and Boston Antiquarian Club (1879), which later became the Bostonian Society (1881). He was also a life member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, where he served on numerous committees and the Board of Directors, as well as a committee to publish the American Journal of Numismatics. Other memberships included the Granite Club, No. 1 and Boston's Keystone Club, No. 1. Colburn was a longtime contributor to the Historical Magazine and published Bibliography of the Local History of Massachusetts. Jeremiah Colburn died 30 December 1891.

Francis Fayette Stockwell (1834-1913) was born 11 November 1834 in Charlton, Mass. to Leonard Stockwell and Orilla Sessions Stockwell. He married Martha Berry (1833-1908) in 1860. He trained and worked in Boston as an engraver and for much of his career operated out of 99 Court Street. Stockwell died 1 November 1913.

Collection Description

The Jeremiah Colburn autograph collection additions consists of 4 manuscript boxes of autographs, newspaper clippings, printed material, and portrait reproductions mainly collected by Jeremiah Colburn. An album containing autographs of Massachusetts governors compiled by Francis Fayette Stockwell, as well as some later autographs, were added to the collection while housed at the Bostonian Society.

The collection contains autographs of prominent figures from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries who represent numerous New England and Southern states, as well as European countries. They include businessmen, politicians, military and literary figures, doctors, scientists, historians, librarians, and fellow collectors of coins, medals, books, and autographs. The bulk of the autographs appear on correspondence but also include marriage certificates, power of attorney statements, tax forms, and receipts. Colburn appears to have acquired many of the signatures through his position as appraiser at the Boston Custom House and roles and connections he maintained through his involvement with the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Bostonian Society, Prince Society, Boston Numismatic Society, American Journal of Numismatics, Granite Club, No. 1, and Boston Keystone Club, No. 1. He also appears to have acquired autographs through purchase of individual items and bulk items from shops and estate sales. He included newsclippings and printed materials that provide biographical information for many of the signees.

Custodial History

The Jeremiah Colburn autograph collection additions were bequeathed to the Bostonian Society following the death of Eliza Ann Blackman Colburn in 1897. They maintained the collection until 1971 when it was deposited at the Massachusetts Historical Society. While kept at the Bostonian Society, an autograph volume of Massachusetts governors was added to the collection. An inventory notes this volume was complied by Francis Fayette Stockwell. Miscellaneous autographs that post-date Stockwell's death were also added before the collection was deposited at the MHS.
