Abstract
This collection consists of records of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, a Revolutionary War veterans' organization founded in 1783, including correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, scrapbooks, personal papers, and printed material.
Historical Sketch
The Society of the Cincinnati was formed in 1783 by veterans of the American Revolution to perpetuate the friendships they had developed during the war and to promote its patriotic ideals. The general officers and one officer from each regiment first met on 10 May 1783, and the society was officially established three days later as the "Institution" was proposed, revised, and carried into effect. The society took its name from the historical Roman figure, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. George Washington served as its first president, Henry Knox as secretary, and Alexander McDougall as treasurer.
Initially, members were required to have served three years in the army, resigned with honor after three years as an officer, or been placed on inactive duty by a resolution of Congress. In 1854, eligibility requirements were broadened to include officers who had: 1) served three years in the army; 2) died while in service; 3) served in the Continental Army; 4) or been transferred into a reserve unit. This change is referred to as the Rule of 1854. Membership follows a direct male-descent line from the "propositus," or originating member. The general society meets every three years, or whenever deemed necessary by the presiding officers.
The general society was divided into state branches, which met regionally and sent delegates to the triennial general meetings. The Massachusetts chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati was founded on 9 June 1783. Its first meeting was held at the cantonment of the Massachusetts line near Newburgh, on the Hudson River. Benjamin Lincoln was elected president; Henry Knox, vice president; John Brooks, secretary; and Henry Jackson, treasurer. The society remains active today, and meetings are still held in Boston.

Detailed Description of the Collection
I. Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati records, 1765-1990
This series contains correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, and scrapbooks and other miscellaneous records of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati. Each subseries is arranged with loose papers first, followed by volumes.
A. Correspondence, 1780-1947
The bulk of this subseries consists of loose correspondence, including William Eustis' original statement on the formation of the general Society of the Cincinnati, presented by Judge Eustis of New Orleans through James W. Sever (Boston) (1782); circulars to and from the Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia state chapters; and letters regarding membership and requests for relief.
Circulars, the main form of communication between state chapters and the general society, include extracts of minutes, thoughts on possible rulings, and general announcements. Of particular interest are handwritten circulars by Henry Knox (1788, 1790, 1791, 1793), a four-page handwritten circular by Alexander Hamilton (1796), and correspondence from General William Hull (1787, 1793) and General William Moultrie (1792).
Letters of application for membership in the society include personal and genealogical information and character references. Among the later correspondence are requests for verification of family lineage and membership. Letters requesting monetary aid describe applicants' family life, health, and hardships. Included is some information about cash awarded, but subseries B (financial records) contains most of the receipts documenting these grants.
This subseries also contains one bound letterbook (1866-1885) with copies of outgoing correspondence from society officers Samuel Crocker Cobb and Francis Winthrop Palfrey.
