Henry Williamson Haynes was born in Bangor, Maine, 2 Sep. 1831, the son of Nathaniel H. and Caroline J. (Williamson) Haynes. His father was editor of the Eastern Republican. His maternal grandfather was William D. Williamson, an historian from Maine. Henry W. Haynes studied at the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard University in 1851. He studied law at Harvard and practiced law in Boston. He was professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Vermont (1867-1873). Haynes married Helen Wald Blanchard in 1867. From 1873 to 1879, he studied archaeology in Europe and Egypt. He returned to Boston, where he lived the rest of his life. Haynes made numerous contributions to scientific journals and gave lectures in archaeology. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Boston Public Library, the Massachusetts Historical Society (where he served as corresponding secretary), the American Antiquarian Society, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Boston Society of Natural History, and the Essex Institute. He was secretary of the Harvard Class of 1851. Haynes's wife died in 1902, and Haynes died in 1912.
