See below for an alphabetical index of all items in this collection.

This guide to the microfilm edition of the Quincy, Wendell, Holmes, and Upham family papers supercedes the 1977 printed guide and index located on Reel 67.

Arrangement

The Quincy, Wendell, Holmes, and Upham family papers are organized into two series. Series I, the non-chronological papers (Reel 1-19), is arranged by family, then by individual from oldest to youngest. The papers of each individual are subdivided by type: (1) diaries, journals, memoirs, and letterbooks; (2) business and legal papers; and (3) compositions, lectures, sermons, etc., of a literary, historical, political, or religious nature. Series II (Reel 20-67) contains all loose papers and items removed from bound collections arranged in a single chronological sequence. Undated items are microfilmed alphabetically by author at the end of Reel 66.

Each document on the microfilm has a target identifying the writer, the addressee if any, the date, and the name of the collection in which the original is located. Targets also indicate which items are copies. When a draft or copy of an item exists, it has been included only if it is different from the original or if no original has been located. Envelopes have been microfilmed with their corresponding letters only when they contain additional text or information about the writer, addressee, or date. Transcripts, when available, have been included with the original documents. Blank pages have not been microfilmed.

Acquisition Information

The Quincy family papers were a gift of members and descendants of the Quincy family, 1795-1967, including Mr. and Mrs. Mark A. DeWolfe Howe, Mr. and Mrs. Mark DeW. Howe, Quincy Howe, Edmund Quincy, Eliza Susan Quincy, and Quincy W. Wales. Other Quincy family papers were acquired by purchase. The Wendell family account book (1716-1760) was given by Bernhard Knollenberg in 1958, and the receipt book (1740-1750) was a gift of Henry Winchester Cunningham in 1923. Other Wendell family papers were given by Mrs. Edward Jackson Holmes of Topsfield, Mass., 1954, and Mr. and Mrs. Barrett Wendell, 1910-1921. The Holmes family papers were given by Rev. Alexander McKenzie in 1875 and by Holmes's grandson, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, in 1925. The 6-volume journal of Mary Avery Baldwin Upham was a gift from Mrs. Harold Buckminster Hayden in 1964. The Hugh Upham Clark collection was a gift from Hugh Upham Clark, 1978.

Note: The information identifying each item on the microfilm ("targets") may not match the description in the index exactly. In some cases, various parts of an individual volume have been filmed in different locations and/or identified with separate targets on the microfilm. The numerical designations below indicate the reel number and the order in which the items appear on the film; I.1 is the first item on reel 1. These numbers do not appear on the microfilm. Each item description is followed by the name of the collection in which the item appears, e.g. Edmund Quincy's (1681-1738) notes on sermons, 1722-1724, are in the Belcher-Jennison-Weiss papers.

Index

Expand all

This index contains all of the documents in the microfilm edition of the Quincy, Wendell, Holmes, and Upham family papers. Entries include writers, addressees, and subjects of individual documents, followed by item descriptions, dates, and reel and frame numbers where those items are located. For example, the first entry "Abbot, Abiel" is followed by the description "Pastoral letter to congregation, 1827, 43:181." This indicates that Abiel Abbot's 1827 pastoral letter to the congregation is located on Reel 43, Frame 181.

With the exception of correspondence, items are listed in the order in which they appear on the reels. Correspondence is listed last after each main entry, divided into letters written and received, and arranged alphabetically by correspondent. A frame number in parenthesis indicates that the item is a transcript of the previous document. A lower-case "c" indicates that the item is a copy of an unlocated original.

The wives of Quincy, Wendell, Holmes, and Upham family members are indexed under their married names. However, women from the Quincy, Wendell, Holmes, and Upham families are indexed under their maiden names, unless they married a member of one of the other three families, in which case they are indexed under their married names. For example, Mary Jackson Holmes Parsons (1802-1825), who married Usher Parsons, is indexed under her maiden name "Holmes, Mary Jackson." Ann Susan Holmes Upham (1804-1877), who married Charles W. Upham, is indexed under her married name "Upham, Ann Susan Holmes."

Note: Unfortunately, the frame numbers used in this index were excluded from the microfilm, so locating specific items can be challenging. However, each item on the microfilm is preceded by a labeled folder, and by stopping the film at a random spot, you can discover which item you're looking at by reading the label. Then refer to this index and find the frame number for that item, which will tell you where you are on the film.
