Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of the personal correspondence and religious writings of Ezra Stiles Gannett, assistant and later pastor of the Federal (later Arlington) Street Church, 1824-1871, and a leader in the Unitarian movement.

Biographical Sketch

Ezra Stiles Gannett (1801-1871), son of Caleb (1745-1818) and Ruth (Stiles) Gannett (1765-1808), was a Unitarian minister, editor, and a founder and the first secretary of the American Unitarian Association. He married Anna Linzee Tilden (1811-1846) in 1835.

William Channing Gannett (1840-1923), son of Ezra Stiles (1801-1871) and Anna Linzee (Tilden) Gannett (1811-1846), was a Unitarian minister and a biographer of his father. He married Mary Thorn Lewis (1854-1952) in 1887.

Collection Description

The Ezra Stiles Gannett papers consist of the personal and religious papers of Ezra Stiles Gannett, assistant and later pastor of the Federal (later Arlington) Street Church, 1824-1871, and a leader in the Unitarian movement. The collection includes loose papers, primarily the correspondence of Ezra Stiles Gannett and his son William Channing Gannett; sermon notes; diaries and travel journals, 1821-1871, describing Gannett's ministry, his activities on behalf of the Unitarian Church, and his travels in Europe in 1836-1838 and 1865; and tributes and obituaries prepared after Gannett's death. Among Gannett's correspondents are many prominent Unitarians, including William Ellery Channing (1780-1842), James Freeman Clarke (1810-1888), John Cordner (1816-1894), Calvin Lincoln (1799-1881), Samuel Joseph May (1797-1871), and Henry Ware, Jr. (1794-1843). Subjects include church operations, theological doctrines, Boston social life, slavery, and the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.

I. Loose papers, 1816-1918

The bulk of this series consists of the correspondence of Ezra Stiles Gannett and his son William Channing Gannett. The series also contains notes, essays, clippings, lists, reports, bills, speeches, and other papers, as well as a copy of Ezra Stiles Gannett's last will and testament and two small diaries. See below for a chronological list of most of the items in this series.
