Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of the papers of Theodore F. Dwight, librarian and chief of the Bureau of Rolls and Library at the U.S. Department of State, including correspondence, documents, and instructions relating, in part, to Dwight's official mission in 1881 to London to secure the Stevens' Franklin papers for the U.S. Government.

Biographical Sketch

Theodore Frelinghuysen Dwight (1846-1917), librarian and autograph collector, was born in Auburn, N.Y., and educated at the Collegiate Institute, Rochester. He was employed from 1869 to 1872 at the Pacific Union Express Company in San Francisco; 1873-1875, varying employment with G. P. Putnam's in New York as secretary to historian George Bancroft; 1875-1888 as librarian and chief of Bureau of Rolls at the Library, Department of State, Washington, D.C.; 1888-1892, in charge of the Adams family archives and secretary and proofreader for Henry Adams during his completion of the History of the United States and also for Charles Francis Adams; 1892-1894 as librarian of the Boston Public Library; and 1904-1914 as American Consul at Vevey, Switzerland. His clubs included the Tavern, Boston; Players, N.Y.; and the Colonial. He contributed articles on documents and historical subjects to Overland Monthly, 1869; Magazine of American History, 1883; Annual Cyclopedia, 1885; and was active in literary and journalistic affairs.

Collection Description

The Theodore F. Dwight papers are housed in 14 document boxes and divided into two series: Autograph Collection and Personal Papers. The autograph collection, the gathering of which occupied most of Dwight's lifetime, spans a period 1668-1915, the most concentrated section being 1835-1895, and includes the autographs of most, if not all, European and American celebrities of the Victorian Age. The collection consists of letters, covers, autographed poems and manuscripts, sentiments, signatures, sketches, book plates, clippings from magazines and newspapers, programs, and prospectuses for books and art works. These items were mainly solicited by Dwight himself; some, however, were bought, exchanged or begged from friends and employers. The autographs were garnered from such sources as George Bancroft, G. P. Putnam's, Caroline Gilman of Charleston, the Alward family, Henry Edwards, Benjamin Avery, Henry C. Carey, Charles W. Stoddard, Henry Adams, C. F. Adams II, the files of Col. Rivett-Carnac, Lord Burlingame, John Hay, A. A. Adee, and the Department of State. This series also includes letters written to Henry Adams and Marian (Hooper) Adams ("Clover"), probably collected by Dwight when he worked for Adams.

The second series, Dwight's personal papers, includes some early family items (1791-1822), letters written to his friend William Baker (1864-1875), and other personal papers (1883-1895), as well as an array of mostly unidentified notes, essays, book chapters, sketches, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed matter.
