Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of the papers of William Pepperrell, Maine merchant and commander of the American forces on the expedition to Louisbourg on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (1745), during King George's War. The bulk of the papers relate to Pepperrell's command at Louisbourg, but they also include business correspondence, family correspondence, and genealogical materials.

Collection Description

The papers of William Pepperrell, commander of the Louisbourg expedition during King George's War, range from 1664-1782, with the bulk spanning 1745-1746. The papers document the 1745 expedition against the French at Louisbourg and include military orders and reports, regiment lists, returns, correspondence regarding strategies, commission and discharge requests, accounts of payments and receipts from soldiers, reports on supplies, receipts, and invoices on provisions.

The collection also includes documents relating to the Stamp Act, business correspondence, and some family correspondence. Nathaniel Sparhawk's correspondence to Pepperrell contains both business and family news. Sparhawk, a business partner in trade with Benjamin Colman of Boston, married Pepperrell's daughter Elizabeth.

Correspondents include the following: Robert Auchmuty, Charles Chauncy, Benjamin Colman, Thomas Cushing, Henry Flynt, Thomas Hancock, Increase Mather, Andrew Oliver, Thomas Pownall, William Shirley, Samuel Shute, Nathaniel Sparhawk, Edward Tyng, Samuel Waldo, and John Wheelwright.

Acquisition Information

The majority of the papers in this collection were donated to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1791 by Jeremy Belknap. Later papers were acquired by purchase early in the 20th century. All papers are the property of the MHS.
