9 ADAMS, John Quincy. A.L.S., one page, quarto. Quincy, July 11, 1837. To "Messrs Samuel T. De Ford, Edward Burrell, John Bradbury, Thomas Davis and Ebenezer D. Pettingall. Committee of Arrangements for the celebration of the 61st anniversary of National Independence at Newbury-Port. $65.00
Splendid letter to a group of citizens of Newburyport sending them a copy of his "Oration prepared at the invitation of the inhabitants of Newburyport, for their celebration of the recent anniversary of our National Independence." Adams then confesses that some parts of the speech were omitted in the delivery "to avoid trespassing too much upon [the people's] time." He concludes with the expression of his gratitude "for the kind and cordial reception they were pleased to give me, and for the indulgent hearing of that portion of them which composed the auditory on that day. . . ."
