Note: This is another copy by Judge Cushing in the Paine Papers of JA's last, unpublished "Novanglus" essay, the incomplete and irregularly sequenced original Ms of which is in the Adams Papers, Jan.–April 1775. According to a note attached by Charles Cushing Paine to the first page of the above, "This paper...was sent to Edes & Gill on the morning of the Battle of Lexington....But it was never published, the paper [Boston Gazette] being then discontinued, and was by them handed to Judge C[ushing]." Paine's note, taken in conjunction with JA's own recollections (JA, Diary & Autobiography, 3:313) demonstrate conclusively that this essay should be assigned the date [April 1775].
