- IMPORTANT LETER WRITTEN BY ADAMS AS AMERICAN MINISTER TO ENGLAND. He writes in part: "A number of very ridiculous reports are from time to time circulated to keep up the impression of a speedy renewal of hostilities between the United States and this Country, but although the disposition on both sides is nothing less than friendly and by no means so pacific [as] I could wish and although occurances of an irritating nature have taken place and other may be yet expected, I willingly persuade myself that the prospects of peace between the two Countries are more favorable than they were when I wrote you last. Col. Nicholls's treaty offensive and defensive with the Creek Indians has been explicitly though only verbally disavowed. . . . The determination to deprive us of the Coast Fishery is asserted in a manner so presumptory that I think no other resource would be left for maintaining our right to it than that to which you say that New England will resort and is of herself compitent. . . . Early in the course of the summer the British Government determined to maintain and to increase their Naval armament on the Canadian Lakes. This very significant measure appears to have been understood by our Government and we have properly taken the hint and determined upon corresponding armaments on our side. . . ." Etc. etc.
