  • Adams, John (Signer from Massachusetts). A.L.s., 1 p., 4to; Paris, 24 Dec. 1792. To "Mr. Dumas" [probably C.F.W. Dumas, ChargĂ© d'Affaires in The Hague]. Backed with heavy paper. Ink smear in first line. Adams as minister plenipotentiary to the United Provinces had encountered continuous frustrations in the attempt to negotiate a Dutch alliance and loan under terms satisfactory to France. In this letter he asks Dumas to send him a copy of Pensees Sur la Revolution, inquires for news of his son, and ends with a plaintive, though timely, comment: "We cannot say whether we are to have Peace or not. I wish the definitive Treaty were signed or the Negotiations broken off that I may return to you."
  • Redated from 24 Dec. 1792 based on internal evidence, RFK, 17 July 2008
