- LEE and others. L.S. (also signed by John Adams and Henry Laurens), 1 p., fol. State House, Phila., Sept. 5, 1777. "On Public Service," to the Deputy Muster Master General Northern Department. Franked by Mr. Laurens. "The Resolve of Congress [relative to inducements to foreigners to desert from the British] which you will receive under this Cover will show that we are appointed a Committee & for what purposes. We request you to give us the fullest information you can is your particular department . . ." The letter is endorsed in the handwriting of Richard Varick, who was appointed Deputy Muster Master General on the 25th inst. Address leaf damaged along one margin; text unimpaired. Accompanying the letter is a draft, with many additions and corrections, of the reply sent by Varick to the Committee.
