Barnum & Bailey's was the first circus to display 3 rings, and the show's first primary attraction was Jumbo, an African elephant purchased in 1882 from the London Zoo. Elected in 1875 as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, P.T. Barnum was instrumental in starting Bridgeport Hospital, founded in 1878, and was its first president.
