The Limones estate was originally developed by the Sanchez family of Cienfuegos, Cuba. In the 1890s, Edwin Atkins bought Limones and added its land to his plantations at Soledad. Limones would later become the home of the Harvard Botanical Station for Tropical Research and Sugar Cane Investigation, funded by Atkins and run by Harvard University.
