In this letter written in October 1795 to Jeremy Belknap, John Adams shares his thoughts about the issues of slavery and abolition, topics initially prompted by St. George Tucker's queries. Adams suggests that "Justice" for enslaved people should involve the cessation of the slave trade and the liberation of enslaved people in the United States "by Degrees."
