In this letter, statesman Samuel Dexter responds to St. George Tucker's queries, circulated by Jeremy Belknap, about slavery and abolition in Massachusetts. He speculates upon the various petitions that enslaved people presented to Thomas Gage and Thomas Hutchinson in the 1770s, as well as those measures passed by the state legislature during the same period, and their effect on slavery in the state.
