In this letter Thomas Pemberton responds to St. George Tucker's queries, circulated by Jeremy Belknap, about slavery and abolition in Massachusetts. Pemberton speaks at some length about the origins of slavery in Great Britain and the colonies, and focuses particularly on the end of slavery in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary period. Pemberton (1728-1807) was a Boston merchant and historian, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and a frequent contributor to its Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society series.
