In this letter John Tracy writes to Massachusetts Governor John Hancock on behalf of Captain Wells, a merchant of Newburyport. Tracy is seeking assistance for Captain Wells from the governor to indemnify him from prosecution in the West Indies after an enslaved person concealed himself on his ship, Susan.  Slavery still existed in the West Indies after it was abolished in Massachusetts, and the merchants of the Commonwealth carried on an extensive trade with the islands.
