Charles Francis Adams, Jr. (1835-1915), described Stephen A. Perkins as "the choicest mind I ever knew." Also admired for his physical beauty, many of Capt. Perkins's fellow officers considered his friendship a compliment. Although wracked by illness, Perkins refused to stay out of the fight at Cedar Mountain. Robert Gould Shaw later found him bullet-riddled and mutilated on the battlefield.
