This portrait of Sarah King Minns (1737-1819) was painted by Ethan Allen Greenwood (1779-1856) in 1818.
Sarah King Minns was born in 1737 to Henry and Sarah (Milton) King. She married William Minns, a Boston landowner and merchant, in 1756. Loyalists during the Revolution, she and her family fled to Halifax, Nova Scotia when the British troops evacuated Boston in 1776. Later the same year they moved to Newport, Rhode Island, which was still occupied by the British. In 1779 the British evacuated Newport at which time the family probably went to New York City and again to Halifax. After the war they returned to Boston. Minns died a widow in Boston in 1819.
