Joshua Johnson was born in Calvert County, Maryland, in 1742. A merchant who lived for many years in England and France, he undertook various missions for the state of Maryland and for Congress. He married Catherine Nuth and was the father of first lady Louisa Catherine Adams, wife of John Quincy Adams. Johnson was the first United States Consul in London from 1790 to 1797. Joshua Johnson died in Frederick, Maryland, in 1802.
