Captain Richard Cary of the Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment wrote many letters to his wife Helen, describing Civil War camp life and several military engagements, including the Battle of Ball’s Bluff and the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. In this particular letter he references the naval battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack (rechristened by the Confederates as the CSS Virginia), and describes meeting John Wilkes Booth while in Baltimore.
