This portrait depicts Mary Otis Gray, (1730-1763). She was the sister of James Otis, Jr., patriot, politician and orator, and of Mercy Otis Warren, patriot, historian and dramatist. In 1761 Mary Otis married John Gray, Boston collector of customs before the Revolution and owner of the ropewalks.
