Collection Description
The earliest materials in this collection, mostly legal papers, pertain to Arthur Savage and his wife Faith (Phillips) Savage (later Russell). Papers of the mid- to later 1700s consist of business and legal papers of Samuel Phillips Savage, including materials on the Massachusetts Board of War and a volume of "Justice's Records...belonging to S. P. Savage," 1787-1789. The years surrounding 1800 include family correspondence between Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage and their children. The collection also contains correspondence between Sarah Hayward (the second wife of Lemuel Hayward) and Susanna (Hayward) Shaw.
From the 1820s onward, papers consist primarily of correspondence of Charles Savage, Henry Savage, and Samuel Hay Savage. Also included, beginning in the 1880s, is correspondence concerning the estates of Henry Savage in Guatemala and El Salvador.
