Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of the business and personal papers of generations of the Savage and Shaw families, primarily correspondence between Charles, Henry, and Samuel Hay Savage, who worked as export and import merchants in Central America, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Biographical Sketches

Arthur Savage (1680-1735) was a merchant, shipowner, sea captain, and first provincial secretary of Nova Scotia. He married in 1710 Faith Phillips (1690-1775), the sister of Gillam Phillips. Faith (Phillips) Savage married (2nd) the Hon. Daniel Russell (1685-1763).

Samuel Phillips Savage (1718-1797) was the son of Arthur and Faith (Phillips) Savage. He was a merchant, a partner with his brother in Arthur Savage & Co. of Boston, a judge, and chairman of the Massachusetts Board of War during the American Revolution. He married (1st) in 1742 Sarah Tyler (1718-1764), (2nd) Bathsheba (Thwing) Johnston (1725-1792), and (3rd) Mary Meservie (d. 1810).

Samuel Savage (1748-1831) was the son of Samuel Phillips and Sarah (Tyler) Savage. He was a physician and judge residing in Barnstable, Mass. He married in 1777 Hope Doane (1756-1830).

William Savage (1750-1827) was the son of Samuel Phillips and Sarah (Tyler) Savage. A merchant in Kingston, Jamaica, for most of his life, he married (1st) Jane Cooper Demetriss (1755-1799) and (2nd) Ann Somersett (1755-1819). He had two sons by his first wife: John (1790-1834) and James Rodon Savage (1792-1816).

Samuel Savage (1779-1800) was the son of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage. He died in Kingston, Jamaica, where he was employed by his cousin Arthur Savage (1766-1814).

William Henry Savage (1782-1839), the son of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage, was a merchant in Kingston, Jamaica, for a number of years. He moved back to the United States in 1812 and died in Tivoli, New York. He married (1st) Adelaide Hay (1806-1827) and (2nd) Maria Addison Hoffman (1800-1865).

Elisha Doane Savage (1786-1807), the son of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage, died at Kingston, Jamaica, where he had entered the employ of his uncle William Savage.

Hope Savage (1793-1879), the daughter of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage, was the second wife of Lemuel Shaw (1781-1861), the son of Oakes and Susannah (Hayward) Shaw. Susannah (Hayward) Shaw was the sister of Dr. Lemuel Hayward (1749-1821), who married Sarah Savage (1757-1781), the daughter of Thomas Savage. Hope (Savage) Shaw and Lemuel Shaw had two sons: Lemuel Shaw, Jr. (1828-1884) and Samuel Savage Shaw (b. 1833). Lemuel Shaw's daughter by his first wife was Elizabeth Shaw, who married Herman Melville in 1847.

John Savage (1789-1811), the son of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage, graduated from Harvard in 1810 and died soon after.

Charles Savage (1785-1840), the son of Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage, was a merchant in Boston, Lexington, and Louisville, Kentucky. He went to Guatemala in 1824 as U.S. consul. In 1830, he was a merchant in New Orleans, and he returned to Central America in 1833. He married Susan Wood (1790-1825), and the couple had no children.

Henry Savage (1804-1882) was the son of William Henry Savage, born in Jamaica. He went with his uncle Charles Savage to Guatemala in 1825, becoming a prosperous merchant and landowner in Guatemala and El Salvador, where he remained the rest of his life.

Samuel Hay Savage (1827-1901) was the son of William Henry Savage and Adelaide (Hay) Savage. His mother died soon after he was born, and he was raised in Boston by his aunt Hope (Savage) Shaw and her husband Lemuel Shaw. He became a merchant in Central America with his half-brother Henry Savage, and later was heir to Henry's holdings in Guatemala and El Salvador. He married Catherine Davenport Hayward, the daughter of Joseph Henshaw Hayward and Mary May (Davenport) Hayward. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Lemuel Hayward.

Collection Description

The earliest materials in this collection, mostly legal papers, pertain to Arthur Savage and his wife Faith (Phillips) Savage (later Russell). Papers of the mid- to later 1700s consist of business and legal papers of Samuel Phillips Savage, including materials on the Massachusetts Board of War and a volume of "Justice's Records...belonging to S. P. Savage," 1787-1789. The years surrounding 1800 include family correspondence between Samuel and Hope (Doane) Savage and their children. The collection also contains correspondence between Sarah Hayward (the second wife of Lemuel Hayward) and Susanna (Hayward) Shaw.

From the 1820s onward, papers consist primarily of correspondence of Charles Savage, Henry Savage, and Samuel Hay Savage. Also included, beginning in the 1880s, is correspondence concerning the estates of Henry Savage in Guatemala and El Salvador.
