Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of 12 bound volumes of records of Naushon Island, Mass., kept by members of the Forbes family and their guests.

Collection Description

This collection consists of 12 bound volumes of records of Naushon Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands, Mass. The volumes contain guest lists, daily records, poems, photographs, watercolors, drawings, clippings, play programs, scripts, memoranda, extracts, correspondence, and records of plantings, trees, sheep, hunting, sailing, and weather on the island. The books were kept by members of the Forbes family and include contributions from their guests, including Annie Drinker (a.k.a. Edith May), Oliver W. Holmes, Ellen Sturgis Hooper, John Hopkins Morison, Ephraim Peabody, Catharine M. Sedgwick, William W. Swain, Caroline Sturgis Tappan, Henry W. Torrey, John Weiss, and others. Forbes family members represented include Alice Forbes Cary, John Murray Forbes, W. Cameron Forbes, and Sarah Forbes Hughes. The dates of the volumes overlap (1833-1855, 1833-1883, 1833-1888, 1833-1949, 1834-1875, 1836-1946, 1844-1883, 1860-1881, 1866-1936, 1872-1893, 1872-1964, 1890-1925), and some content is copied into more than one volume.

Arrangement Note

When these volumes were deposited at the Massachusetts Historical Society, they had been organized according to multiple numbering schemes. Because of this, and because the dates of the volumes overlap, they have been rearranged in a simple chronological sequence and identified as Vols. A-L without regard to any original numbering. The number or Roman numeral embossed on the cover of each volume has been included in the Detailed Description below for reference only.
