Abstract
This collection consists of the papers of Boston lawyer and governor of Massachusetts (1947-1948) Robert F. Bradford, who also served as Middlesex County (Mass.) district attorney (1938-1945) and lieutenant governor of Massachusetts (1945-1946). The collection includes personal and political correspondence, campaign papers, and phonograph records, as well as scrapbooks of newspaper clippings.
Biographical Sketch
Robert Fiske Bradford was born in 1902, the son of Edith (Fiske) Bradford and Dr. Edward H. Bradford. He was ninth in direct descent from William Bradford (1589-1657). His siblings were Elizabeth (Wibbet), Edward H., and Charles H. Bradford. Robert F. Bradford was educated at the Browne and Nichols School (now Buckingham, Browne and Nichols) in Cambridge, Mass.; Harvard College (A.B. 1923); and Harvard Law School (L.L.B. 1926). He was associated with Ropes, Gray, Boyden & Perkins and Ely, Bradford, Thompson & Brown prior to his election as governor, and afterwards was a partner with Palmer and Dodge (Boston). Bradford served as executive secretary to the governor of Massachusetts (1931-1935) and held numerous other political offices, principally as two-term district attorney for Middlesex County (1938-1945); lieutenant governor (1945-1946); and governor (1947-1948). In addition, he was affiliated with a number of educational and charitable institutions as a trustee or director, among them Harvard College, Simmons College, Browne & Nichols School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Norfolk House Centre, Massachusetts Hospital School, Greater Boston Council of Social Agencies, and others (see cartons 13-14).
Robert F. Bradford married Rebecca Crowninshield Browne of Salem, Mass. in 1926. The couple had four children: Rebecca C. (Patsy, b. 1927), Ann H. (Puns, b. 1928), Robert H. (b. 1936), and Charles Edward (b. 1941).
After losing his bid for re-election in 1948, Bradford retired from public office and remained a partner with Palmer and Dodge for the rest of his working career. In 1951, he developed Parkinson's disease. During the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. and Mrs. Bradford traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad (see cartons 5-6). Bradford died in 1983. (See carton 5 for other biographical and genealogical information.)

Detailed Description of the Collection
I. Family and personal papers, 1909-1971
Family and personal papers include school papers for both Rebecca C. Browne Bradford and Robert F. Bradford. Family correspondence includes early letters between Robert F. Bradford, his parents, and his siblings, as well as later letters between Robert F. Bradford, Rebecca C. Browne Bradford, their children, and members of the Browne and Chamberlain families (Rebecca C. Browne Bradford's mother and siblings). Letters written by the children's teachers, doctors, and camp counselors are also included. The series also contains travel records of Robert F. Bradford and Rebecca C. Browne Bradford, 1949-1971, and diaries of Robert F. Bradford, 1957-1966, mostly the line-a-day variety. There is one diary of Arthur H. II. General correspondence and papers, 1938-1949
General correspondence and papers consist of letters arranged alphabetically, covering the years 1939-1949 (with a few letters from the end of 1938). This series was already separately designated when the papers came to the MHS, although there is some overlap of correspondents between this series and the three campaign series. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the correspondent's last name, except when they are writing as the representative of a specific company or organization. When only one or two items appear for a specific person, they are located at the beginning of that letter of the alphabet, under, for instance, "Miscellaneous - E." Cartons 13-14 contain correspondence pertaining to Bradford's interests as trustee or director of various institutions and organizations, arranged alphabetically by institution name. There is some overlap between these boxes and the general correspondence as far as individual writers are concerned. For instance, Charles Almy letters appear in the Browne & Nichols files, as well as in the file for "Almy, Charles and Elizabeth."
