Collection Description
Papers of Lyman H. Butterfield, long-time editor at the Massachusetts Historical Society. The collection includes notes and files relating to his historical editing project on the correspondence of Benjamin Rush and other research subjects. Also includes correspondence regarding his professional activities and interactions with other editors. Materials in the collection document his participation in the National Historical Publications Commission and other organizations promoting the preservation and use of historical documentary sources. (Note, Butterfield's files relating to his work as the first Editor-in-Chief of the Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society are not yet part of this collection and remain in the editorial offices of the Adams Papers.)
